It's been a long time since OLSH Soccer defeated Sewickley Academy.
3,272 days to be exact - but who's counting?
The Chargers almost waited a full decade before downing their rivals from across the river, and for this group of Chargers it was well worth the wait - winning 2-1 in an overtime thriller that featured two previously undefeated teams.
OLSH took charge early with another
Ryan Gehring goal in the first 10 minutes of the contest, Sewickely would eventually answer to square the game 1-1 where it would stay at the end of regulation.
Dawson Summers made 13 saves on the night in goal for the Chargers, including some would-be game ending shots from the Panthers in overtime.
In the second 10 minutes of OT - Freshman Danny Bourgeois sent a cross towards the net, looking for
Ryan Gehring - instead Bourgeois pass was a bit strong and found the back of the Panther's net and the Chargers drought was over, and the celebration was on.
Bourgeois is having quite the week for any varsity athlete - not to mention a freshman that's only played in 4 games in high school. Danny is scored a hat trick on Monday at Neshannock and had the assist on the game winning goal score by
Ryan Gehring against BCCS on Tuesday.
"It wasn't really on purpose, it was a cross (pass) and it just went in...I can't take credit for that" Bourgeois said after the game.
While the current players who were between the ages of 4 and 7 the last time OLSH won, might not know the history - it has been a long time coming for assistant coach Dom DeMino who was a sophomore back in 2011 when the purple and gold beat Sewickley on the road on their way to WPIAL Championship appearance.
"I think it's inspiring and a relief." DeMino said.
"It's been about 9 years since OLSH has beat a Sewickley boys soccer team and for them to do what they did tonight is only the beginning of what a historic season this could be. This is a special team."
While it is still early in the season the win puts the Chargers in a great position to capture a section championship, something that hasn't happened in recent history either.
"It feels awesome, so happy for the guys...we've talked about writing our own history and they did that tonight." OLSH Head coach
Eric Carothers said.
