The Burgettstown Blue Devils hosted OLSH for their Gold Star Football Game on Friday night. One of 4 Western Pennsylvania (WPA) Gold Star Games this fall, the game served to honor fallen military members from Western Pennsylvania. This series of games was first organized in 2018 by Dana Tabay, whose brother, Robert Gilberston, took his own life in 2007 while actively serving in the US Navy. Gilbertson was a 1999 graduate of Avonworth High School, where he was a member of the football team.
OLSH received a motorcycle escort from the AAC to Burgettstown's stadium for Friday night's game. 10 players from each team "sacrificed" their names that night to play in honor of a different fallen hero. Each of these players' assigned names were read over the PA each time they made a play, rather than their own name being announced.
The Chargers played their hearts out, defeating the Blue Devils 33-13.
Highlights include a TD run by Brad Vaughn, 60-yard AND 49-yard TD runs by
Stephen Greer, a 20-yard TD pass from
Nehemiah Azeem to
Dorrien Tate, and a 3-yard TD pass to
Gunnar Kiefer.
OLSH plays next at home (Moon High School Stadium) on Friday, September 24th at 7:00 p.m. against the Fort Cherry Rangers.
