The OLSH football team defeated the South Park Eagles last Friday by a final score of 14-13.
The Chargers and Eagles started off the game by exchanging scoreless drives and the score board was empty after the first quarter. The Chargers, who have used multiple quarterbacks so far this season, used the wildcat offense for most of the game with a plethora of players taking the snaps. The Eagles employed a run heavy approach which featured a few explosive passing plays. However, it was the defenses that stole the show in the first half. It was still 0-0 with just one play remaining in half number one but the Chargers had the ball at the South Park 26 yard line. Needing a big pass, the Chargers turned to sophomore Jamari "JJ" Hayden and he threw one up to
Thomas Pinno in the left corner of the end zone. Pinno caught the ball to give the Chargers a 6-0 lead as they walked into the locker room.
The third quarter was much like the first with no points going on the board. But in the fourth, the offenses came to life. South Park quarterback Robert Lenzi used the sneak play to get into the end zone from one yard out giving the Eagles a 7-6 lead. The Chargers would need a response if they were to get a much needed win. They started at their own 20 yard line and went back to their newly installed wildcat approach. They ultimately worked their way 77 yards down the field to set up one defining play. It was fourth down and goal from the 4 yard line and the only person in the back field was freshman power back
Jamire Samuels. He took the snap and dragged multiple Eagle defenders with him on his way in for a touchdown. He would do the exact same thing on the two point conversion attempt and it was now Chargers 14, Eagles 7. The game was not over yet as the Eagles had a nice return to set up their drive at their own 45 yard line. They would go on to work it to the Charger 37 yard line but it was fourth down and five. Instead of going for the sticks, the Eagles threw up a pass to Colsen Heynes and he not only caught it, but also ran it into the end zone for six. South Park, now trailing by one, elected to go for two and the lead with just two minutes left. The Chargers drew the line and sacked Lenzi to win the game 14-13.
This was a big section win for the Chargers who improved to 2-2 in section play and 3-4 overall. They will host Steel Valley at Moon Stadium this Saturday at 7:00pm.
