The OLSH Chargers football team had an unfortunate end to their season Friday night, falling to Riverside in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs by a final score of 29 to 8. The game started off well for the Chargers with
Owen Tonery getting an interception on the first possession of the game. After that big play, neither team could break through for the rest of the first quarter as it ended scoreless. The second quarter was much of the same for the first ten minutes. However, Riverside would make a game changing play on the Charger defense with a 24 yard completion to set up first and goal at the Charger 4 yard line. On the very next play, Riverside ran it in to give them a 7 to 0 with 48 seconds to go in the first half. Then, the Chargers tried to go down the field to even the score but instead they threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown to give Riverside a 14 to 0 at the half. In the second half, the Chargers couldn't generate a spark play to mount a comeback. Riverside would tack on two more touchdowns and a two point conversion to make the score 29 to 0. The Chargers still had one good moment left in the season as senior quarterback
Vann Kavals would run the ball into the end zone from 10 yards out to give the Chargers some points. They would also add a two point conversion to wind up with the final score of 29 to 8. Overall, the Chargers overcame a lot of adversity this season to earn a home playoff game. They had come together from three schools to make up this group of football players. It took a lot of work to successfully go out and play with people they had just met that spring. However, by the end of the year, they had become a team. The Chargers also had to overcome one of the hardest schedules in the state to reach the postseason. The Chargers faced off against 4 top 5 opponents in the WPIAL in 2A and also faced the number one team in 1A. Despite the tough schedule, the Chargers finished the regular season with a 5-4 record with their game against Seton La Salle not being completed due to lightning. The Chargers graduate 8 seniors who all were key in bringing the program together this season and will be greatly missed. The rest of the squad will look to next year and the great accomplishments that lie ahead.
